D3 soon to be PK? comments (557) |
According to this post over at The CPL website, there is currently a vote going on between the already signed-up players who were going to compete in the DOOM 3 1v1 tournament. The vote is to choose if DOOM 3 should be replaced by Painkiller, since Painkiller was announced as the World Tour game on Thursday. What I can also tell you is that there has been over 100 votes so far, and Painkiller is rumoured to be winning.

Why was Painkiller chosen? comments (70) |
PlanetQuake.de have posted up an interesting article on to why Painkiller was chosen for the CPL "World Tour". I don't know whether it's true or not, but it's certainly worth the read. Unfortunately, the article is written in German, thus.. you will need to translate it through sites like Babelfish.
CPL World Tour Game: Why it's Painkiller
Next year the CPL World Tour starts a new 1v1 Deatmatch tourney. The Tour will stop in 10 Countries on this Earth and with each stop the winner can win $15,000. Thats not all. After the 10 stops there ill be an big Finalevent where the winner can win $150.000.
Which Game will be played? Some weeks before it seems to be Doom3 before the CPL didnt announced this official. UT2004 is in the race too with the complete 1.000.000$ World Tour.
As statement of the CPL has been negotiated with two Publisher and Developer. The Publisher hasn't been betrayed.
During the last CPL Tourneys its expectable that these Games will be UT2004 and Painkiller. At which Games like Stalker and Farcry would be possible too.
Doom3 of id software parts out, becauce id wont pay Money to the CPL, but seems to that they want to make money out of their Customers.
You can check out the link here.
(Thanks to Mav for the link & translation)

eSLive interview Angel Munoz comments (4) |
eSLive the e-sports based website have have had the chance to put a few questions to The CPL President; Angel Munoz.
The league recently announced the removal of Doom 3 for the CPL World Tour. Why such a decision? What games could possibly replace it?
We originally identified three games that we wanted to use in the tour. A wide range of aspects were taken into consideration, like publisher/developer support for the entire tour, a favorable IP licensing agreement, great spectator potential and support from our sponsors. DOOM 3 was the first game we eliminated. Recently we have eliminated a second title that will not be publicly disclosed, and now we are in final negotiations with the publisher of the remaining game. We are very excited about the opportunities presented to us with this game, and will announce it soon.
Looks like the game has been picked. Only 3 more days til it gets revealed anyway. :)

Painkiller needs your support! comments (70) |
Now that DOOM 3 will not be the game to be used in the CPL World Tour, there's been a lot of speculation as to what game will be used. There is currently 2 favorites: Painkiller & UT2004. The CPL have already said that it will not be Quake 3, and it won't be CS.. as that's a team game only.
Today I got informed by Stermy the Italian PK player, about a couple of threads over at the CPL forums. One thread was made in the Painkiller section to get Painkiller picked, and one was in the UT2004 section to get UT2004 picked. As you will see, UT2004 had way more people replying to vote for it to get picked, where-as Painkiller only had about 4 replys. So, I'm posting it here, to get all of you Painkiller fans to give Painkiller the support it deserves. Just post to say you would like to see it at the CPL, and why. It will do the game a tremendous amount of good if it does get chosen, so let's help it.
The Painkiller thread at the CPL forums can be found here, and the UT2004 thread can be found here.
What are you waiting for? POST!

Something I missed... comments (616) |
As you would of seen a couple of weeks ago, I posted that pc.ign.com had the chance to get a little hands-on preview of Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell. Well, just by chance.. I was just looking at the front page.. and clicked the link to read it again, because I was bored, and I came across this little piece of information, which I hadn't seen or posted when I first wrote the news about it.
DreamCatcher is also planning to release Painkiller: Black Edition, which will be a combo pack that includes the original game plus the expansion for those of you who missed it the first time around.
This is a pretty smart move on their part, in my opinion. IF PCF can get netcode spot on with BOOH, and this edition gets released, and advertised a lot like Painkiller did, I'm pretty confident Painkiller can do the impossible, and come back to life. After all.. we've all seen the almighty DOOM 3 and not that many are impressed by it. The only other "fast paced" MP game that's due out anytime soon is Quake IV.. and that's not due out until 2006. So, keep your fingers crossed folks! :)

Q&A with Adrian Chmielarz comments (0) |
Spieleflut.de; the german online magazine has sent word of their chance to put a few questions to the main man at PCF - Adrian Chmielarz.
Your game is quite comparable to Serious Sam. Do you like it to be compared with Serious Sam or do you think that your game is completely different?
Quite frankly I don't. I love SS, I played both parts and had a great time, but comparing SS to PK is like comparing Star Wars to Pitch Black, just because both movies are action s-f. But the problem lies in the fact that there are not that many action-oriented shooters on the market, and when people come across something like Painkiller, they feel a need to compare it to something. In my opinion Painkiller is much closer to original Doom than it is to Serious Sam.

Painkiller: BOOH Preview comments (1) |
pc.ign.com have had the chance to get a sneak preview of the upcoming Painkiller expansion; Battle Out of Hell. IGN seemed somewhat 'pleased' with what they had seen so far, although they had only actually played 1 single map from the SinglePlayer portion.

Painkiller: BooH Screenshots comments (73) |
New screenshots have emerged on Worthplaying.com. It looks like the new areas are extremely detailed and are of the quality we have come to expect of the PCF mapping crew. ASUS Summer Cup Painkiller 1v1 comments (4) |
This competition slipped through our net in terms of coverage due to the little publicity it seems to have recieved. However, Polosatiy has been keeping upto date and has posted the results so far on Cyberfight.org. It looks to have been a small affair with only 14 players involved out of a 16 player bracket which is a shame when with a bit of advertising perhaps more high class players would have attended. Irrespective of that, the full results thus far can be found here. It looks like KEKC and SEGA battle it out in the grand final today. Good luck chaps!

Official response to our plea. comments (107) |
PCF have sent us an official response to our plea (thanks guys!). Read it below:This is a short note to clear some things and let people know just what's going on @ PCF.
First some background: at the beginning Painkiller was supposed to be great Single Player game with MP component, not the other way round. We were skeptical about likeness of creating a worthy successor to Quake 1 / QuakeWorld, especially that so many games have failed to meet hardcore player's needs for dynamic Multiplayer experience. Therefore about 90% of the development time was spent on SP. Of course after a while we realized that PK MP could actually meet or even exceed MP community's expectations so we tried to make what very few games dare to do and even fewer do successfully: great SP game AND great MP game at the same time. We devoted all the time left to improve netcode but it was too late to change some basic assumptions that we made at the beginning of development. We tried many approaches with different patch versions but the limited time didn't allow us to actually rewrite netcode from the ground up.
But all hope is definitely not lost. Right now we are working hard on PK Xbox and we took this opportunity to rewrite the netcode completely. We gathered a lot of experience during development of PK PC and we're quite confident that this new netcode will be a significant improvement over previous attempts. We rewrite crucial parts of player movement in order to minimize use of Havok to the necessary minimum (ragdolls etc.). This will allow us to design netcode in a way that was previously impossible (and decrease CPU load as well). Of course once we have that netcode on Xbox we will use it for PK: Battle Out Of Hell expansion pack and future PK patches.
In the meantime please keep in mind:
- To criticize Painkiller's shortcomings in MP department is a bit like bashing Quake 3 for lack of serious Single Player campaign. PK was mainly supposed to be SP-oriented, Q3 was mainly supposed to be MP-oriented. Of course we feel leaving PK's dynamic gameplay only to SP and MP LAN games would be great shame so we're constantly putting great effort to making as good MP netcode as possible.
- If you feel Painkiller offers a kind of hardcore fun you've been missing for a long time, don’t give up on PK just yet. We may not have as much MP experience or manpower as guys behind UT or Quake series (respect!) but we're catching up fast!
P.S. Oh, we are done with the PainEditor/map-making tools and plan to release them soon (actually the tools have been ready for a week now, we took some additional time to test things, write tutorials etc.). Both SP and MP map making/editing will be possible. We can't wait to see what some of the creative minds out there can do with huge possibilities that PAIN engine offers!
P.S.2. PK: BOOH is coming along nicely, we pushed the release date a bit to November 10 but that only means even more of your favorite PK craziness when addon hits the shelves! All hope is not lost....

Painkiller: BooH delayed comments (4) |
Gamespot.com have an article stating that DreamCatchers have announced a 1 month delay in the release of the awaited expansion pack. The reason touted isThe extra time will give the publisher a longer runway to promote the game to the media. Developer People Can Fly will also use the time to add additional gameplay features Lets hope this means they fix the netcode (see last news item)!
Catch the article here.

Plea to the producers / developers of Painkiller comments (0) |
pkeuro.com has strived for some time now to provide all of our readers with the most upto date Multiplayer news and information on the Painkiller scene. With the delivery of the last Patch (1.3), we were hoping for a rewrite of the netcode and for improvements to the gameplay to allow more than 5 players on a server lag free at a time. Due to the time given to the developers for the patch, and the resources available to them for testing, this was not achieved.
With the Xbox release imminent, work on the PC version of the game has stalled with the exception of the expansion "BooH". All hopes now rest on this expansion pack, and the rewrite of the netcode for the Xbox for "good" netcode to be developed.
Without this re-write of the netcode. Painkiller will fail to be a successful online Team based Multiplayer game, and will be overshadowed on the duel front by Doom3. This would be a great shame because a great number of us see potential in Painkiller.
Our plea to DC and PCF is that you spend as much time as you can spare getting the netcode right. Even if it meant the lack of CTF in the expansion pack, it would be worth it. Also open up beta servers, where anyone willing to help you test the netcode, can do so and provide feedback perhaps via our bugs page. Just do whatever it takes to get the netcode right, because if you fail again, its the end of Painkiller online.

Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell site comments (553) |
DreamCatcher; Painkiller's publisher, have unvield the Battle Out of Hell website. Although it's not as flashy as the Panikiller one, it still gives a little information about what will be included with the upcoming expansion pack. We will see things like: - Improved game engine: improved visual effects, updated network prediction code. - Redesign entirely the single player campaign, or create new MP maps with the full set of editing/modding tools provided with the add-on. Which sound pretty cool. Maybe there's still life in the old dog yet. :)
You can check out the site here.

There is SEVEN new screenshots from the upcoming Painkiller expansion due out for fall 2004.. they're just screenshots of 1 particular level, which looks to be set in a war-time theme. Painkiller: Battle out of Hell Q&A comments (74) |
HomeLanFed have had the chance to put a few questions to Adrian Chmielarz; PCF's lead man, about the upcoming Painkiller expansion: Battle Out of Hell.
HomeLAN - What can you tell us about the storyline for the expansion?
Adrian Chmielarz - Assuming all three people who actually cared about the game’s storyline (my observations is most gamers just kept on enjoying the levels themselves, not only for the story) are reading this… Well, as you know, Alastor is the new king of Hell and he has a past with the game’s hero, Daniel. But saying anything else would be a spoiler. We want to take gamers on the ride full of twists and twirls right from the very beginning.
You can read up on the rest of what Adrian has to say here.

PKEURO Painkiller FTP comments (74) |
We've recently set up an FTP for the storage of our PKEURO Duel demos along with other Painkiller related files for your usage. The ftp is set up to store the demos via the version of Painkiller they were recorded with as unfortunately, demos from previous versions of Painkiller cannot be played back on later revisions. The FTP can be found here. We may attempt to smarten it up over time but for now its useable :)
We also have allowed anonymous access for uploading your own demos. You can do this by logging in to ftp.pkeuro.lchost.co.uk port 21 with the username anonymous@pkeuro.lchost.co.uk (no password). The demos upped here require detailed titles or a txt file associated with the demo to explain the players, map, version etc etc. Any demos found without this information will be deleted on a daily basis. I look forward to seeing your demos start arriving :) Hope you find this resource useful.

The patch has been replaced on the Painkiller Official Website and some mirror sites with the corrected version, but this is one of those Teflon-coated slipstream updates with no increment to the version number, so you'll have to work out for yourself whether you have the right version. The incorrect patch is 94129932 bytes in size, while the corrected version is 94133452 bytes.
Typical eh? :)

DM_Mine Map review comments (4) |
I've just concluded the third in my series of Multiplayer map reviews, this time focussing on DM_Mine. This map along with DM_Illuminati have the greatest potential for Team games in the selection released with v1.0. I hope you find the review enjoyable.

ps. if you missed it before, you can catch our short video of DM_Mine here.

I've put pen to paper again and created our next Multiplayer map review. This time I've chosen to cover DM_Illuminati. I think this is an excellent map and am looking forward to many TDM games upon it. I hope you like the review. Catch it here.

First Multiplayer Map Review comments (4) |
I've posted my first Multiplayer map review and the map chosen is DM_Fragenstein. This one of the two or three Duel maps that comes with v1.0 and will be providing fast and furious duels along with voosh games for smaller numbers of players. Hope its helpful. Find the review here.

Note, catch the small movie I provided in an earlier news post here.
