Gameplay - 80%
I've been waiting to get to this part, I have alot to say. *smirks* I think to start with,
Painkiller only really caters for the mindless, simple and fun gamers. That said, I'm glad it is..
I've been getting pretty tired of all these complicated games as of late, where there's about 30
buttons you need to press, just to fire your gun. Painkiller is the king of simple gaming, there
isn't even a crouch button, which for one.. you don't even notice there isn't one. SinglePlayer,
whilst frantic and fun, can get a tad boring after long spells of play. There are a few things
though which can make it fun for a few hours, and that's things like "Secrets" and "Tarot Cards",
as you go through the maps.. you will often find glowing cross shaped things in hard-to-get areas,
these are "secrets". There are also kind of "missions" which vary from things like, complete a
level with just one weapon, or find all gold. If you do the missions, you get awarded "Tarot Cards"
which give you special powers to use through out the game, specially on big bosses.
Now I've mentioned bosses, I'll give you a little info about them.. there are 4 bosses in Painkiller..
all of which are supposed to be Lucifer's Army Generals. They are very big, I'll tell you that.. there's
this one "boss" that lives in a swamp.. and the trick is to shoot the bubbles around him, then shoot him
to cause damage on him, it's pretty fun to do. Another good fun factor is encountering about 50 enemys in one room..
I must admit, it's a blast to kill them, seeing blood and guts everywhere, it brings an evil grin to your face.
The gothic, dark and creepy atmosphere Painkiller has never really goes away throughout the entire
SinglePlayer campaign, on one particular map (Asylum) I got frightened a few times, seeing a bunc
h of amputee's jumping at you, and ghosts coming out of the walls.. was a pretty scary experience
considering it's just a video game.
Graphics - 85%
Well, as you will have seen in the screenshots above, Painkiller is very pretty. The PAIN engine can pump out
polygons faster than probably any engine out right now, to render huge bosses that are incredibly detailed,
and the maps too, PCF can hold their heads high. With the 1.1 patch due any day now also, that will add a
whole bunch of features to the engine, such as demo recording, call voting etc. that will make the PAIN
engine even more powerful. Although Painkiller's graphics don't match to what we've seen in previous
title's like FarCry, it doesn't really matter.. because Painkiller beats FarCry in every other possible aspect,
bar graphics. So if you're looking for eye candy to go with fun, Painkiller is my #1 reccomendation.
Overall - 92%
Final thoughts eh? Well, there's really not much more I can say, apart from that; if your're looking for somthing fresh, exciting and fun.. Painkiller is the game for you. Many people would compare Painkiller to Serious Sam (SP wise), I wouldn't agree though at all, as it's pretty much its own game.
MultiPlayer is another story, but as you can see this is SinglePlayer only.. for more information on Painkiller please visit www.PainkillerGame.com & www.pkeuro.net - I'd like to thank People Can Fly and DreamCatcher games for giving me a memorable SinglePlayer experience, the funny thing is though.. I didn't enjoy it for it's story line, I enjoyed its main goal: FUN TO PLAY.
